What is a Medical Coding Specialist?
A medical coding specialist is part of the medical records billing department of a healthcare organization, such as a hospital or a clinic. They work on the technical and financial side of the medical industry, coding claims for reimbursements and dealing with insurance billing.
What does a Medical Coding Specialist do?
The main responsibility of a medical coding specialist is to assign a code to each type of treatment and diagnosis. The coding system tracks each patient's diagnosis and treatment and assigns them to a specific diagnosis-related group (DRG). Medicare and health insurance programs use the coding to reimburse hospitals.
Required Education and or Certification.
Medical coding specialists must hold a postsecondary certificate or an associate's degree and receive certification. Many employers prefer candidates who are certified by the Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT) organization.

A Day In The Life Of A Medical Claims Processor
A medical Coding Specialist works in a variety of work environments. Medical coders can work at locations such as hospitals, clinics, health care facility, health insurance office and even from their own homes.
The coding systems and associated work environment can be quite complex. Medical coders work under high stress to ensure correct practices are used to analyze records and data and that the proper codes are assigned to procedures so that these can be billed to patients and insurance companies. Inaccurate codes result in incorrect billing, which can cost both the patients and the healthcare providers a great deal. The pressure of a fast paced and highly stressful work environment can take its toll on a medical coder.
Also, unlike many others in the healthcare field, medical coding specialists have no interaction with the patients.
