What is an IT Manager?
An Information Technology Manager is responsible for implementing and maintaining an organization's technology infrastructure. The IT manager monitors an organization's operational requirements, researches strategies/technology solutions, and builds the most cost-effective and efficient system to achieve their goals. Most IT managers are fully trained and capable of handling any IT task; from evaluating new hardware, to assisting, and running cables for the creation of new work areas.
What does an IT Manager do?
An IT manager often recruits and trains system administrators, computer programmers, and database administrators. By consulting with upper-management, an IT manager can determine the organization's IT needs and can then lead their staff in a specific and strategic project. These projects typically adhere to a designated budget and timeline.
The exact scope of an IT manager's responsibilities varies from one setting to another. In some companies, the focus is strictly on computer networks. At other companies, the focus may be on the creation and or upgrading of telephone systems and other electronic support systems connected with the company operation. Along with helping to establish the overall structure of the company network, an IT manager also oversees the routine maintenance of their companies system. This would mean regular testing to ensure that all components are functioning at maximum efficiency.
Required Education and/or Certification.
Some IT managers can be hired with only an associate degree and ample work experience; however, a bachelor's degree in computer science, MIS or a similar computer-oriented major is generally a minimum requirement for an IT management position.
Though not required, product or system certifications could benefit an IT management seeker. These professional certifications are often offered by software or hardware companies and can be used to demonstrate expertise in a specific technology.

A Day In The Life Of A IT Manager
Most jobs will say they're 9am to 5pm, but you should expect to be more flexible than this. The nature of the industry can mean that extra hours are needed at times to meet deadlines. You'll be based out of an office, but if you work with clients there will be travel involved. You'll go to meetings and will often need to work from their offices, sometimes overseas depending on the client and project.
